Engaging Networks at Bridge 2026: Adapting With Changing Times
The opening keynote to the 2026 Bridge to Integrated Marketing & Fundraising Conference started with dimmed lights, the sounds of surging seas, and the sense that a storm was rolling in.
As the speakers took the stage to begin the event, the darkness lifted to showcase a lighthouse. The message: “Stronger Together.”
“There has never been a more important time for us to be together than right now,” said Doug Trout, Conference Co-Chair.
As the industry weathers the storm of disappearing federal funding, donor fatigue, and AI changing every rule in the book, it’s critical for nonprofit leaders to stand firm and continue shining a light on their missions, explained Conference Co-Chair Chris Weiland.
“Every person in this room is a lighthouse for someone,” he said.
The Engaging Networks team was on site at the 2026 Bridge Conference — connecting with industry peers, celebrating wins, and soaking up session after session. Here are our top takeaways from the conference!

2026 Bridge Conference: We’re Stronger Together
Bridge is a cornerstone conference in the nonprofit industry. Held from July 29 to 31 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, Bridge offers an opportunity for people working in the social good space to come together, connect, and learn.
This year, event organizers focused on the value of leaning on your fellow nonprofit peers for help and support as you make your way through a rapidly changing industry landscape. We can find clarity and strength by working together — and, armed with that support, nonprofits can navigate even the rockiest shores.
“Bridge is much more than an annual conference,” said Sarah Miller, President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, DC Metro Area Chapter. “It represents our year-round commitment to making a difference.”
“Every mission represented here is different, but every organization shares the same purpose: To make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” echoed Joanne Wilson, president of the Direct Marketing Association of Washington.
Nonprofit Leaders: Learn, Adapt, and Thrive
A core idea at the 2026 conference was the responsibility nonprofit leaders have to adapt to change. Whether that means fully and finally embracing AI, borrowing branding strategy from some of the biggest for-profit names, or including moments of rest into your busy work schedule, the message was clear: Times have changed, and we need to change with them.
In the opening keynote, Dr. Americus Reed, II, professor and expert on brand identity, gave listeners a crash course in branding. Showing examples from Nike, Starbucks, and Apple, Americus encouraged the crowd to use the same brand strategies of the world’s leading for-profit brands.
“I know you hate the word ‘brand,’ but let me tell you, brand is powerful,” he said. “It’s not some manipulative tool; it’s an opportunity to connect.”
Branding is the pathway to building trust among your donors, explained Americus. “Branding is creating a meaning system,” he said — and showing up consistently helps donors understand your organization, grow to trust you, and decide to support you.
In her closing keynote, Kishshana Palmer, advisor and author, talked about the importance of providing consistent leadership during tumultuous times. When the seas get stormy, nonprofit teams don’t need a leader who makes more waves; they need someone reliable who can guide them like a lighthouse.
“No matter the weather, the lighthouse doesn’t sway; it doesn’t bend; it doesn’t break,” she said. “It just is.”
Rest is a major part of providing steady support to your team (especially as you begin planning for a busy Giving Tuesday and year-end giving season). Kishshana shared tips for protecting your time and your team’s time by blocking time for deep work and intentionally “throttling down” your tasks toward the end of a big project. She also recommended taking time off and encouraging the same from your team — all as part of living well while leading well.
Engaging Networks at the Bridge Conference
The Engaging Networks team was busy at Bridge — from hosting a live demo of our platform, to connecting over the 10th annual Tacos & Tequila (our post-Bridge party for nonprofits, agency partners, and our team), and capping off with a rowdy late night jam session, we loved getting the chance to spend time with clients, partners, and friends.
“Bridge is one of our favorite events of the entire year, with experts from leading organizations sharing hard-won wisdom to benefit the whole nonprofit sector. It’s also a priceless annual reunion for the Engaging Networks team with many far-flung colleagues, including our amazing clients, our agency partners and so many others who choose to work in the charity sector to support nonprofits and their vital missions.”
– Clinton O’Brien, President and Chief Operating Officer of Engaging Networks

Sessions at the 2026 Bridge Conference
With over 125 sessions held over the conference, topics covered nearly every facet of digital fundraising, marketing, and tech. One constant theme did emerge, however: AI is here, and if you’re not sure how to weave it into your digital fundraising strategy, you’re not alone.
Session speakers shared a variety of places to start, however:
- Optimize your content to show up in AI search
- Use agentic AI to prospect, research, and flag donors at risk of lapsing
- Guide users through program enrollment using AI agents
- Build personalized fundraising campaigns at a moment’s notice
- Model fundraising impact and justify investments without the need for a complicated Excel file
- Uncover patterns in past giving data to build informed recommendations for future campaigns
While there may not be a one-size-fits-all approach to AI, a core concept was seeing AI as an amplifier for your team, not a replacement. AI tools can supercharge a small team’s productivity, but it will never replace the human touch or human capacity to connect with supporters.
